Simpson gunning for resurgence in 2018
Shaun Simpson è il pilota di maggior successo della Gran Bretagna nella classe MXGP ed è sul punto di rimbalzare dal peggior anno della sua carriera nel 2017 per offrire più bottino al team Wilvo Yamaha. Lo scozzese di 30 anni è stato l’unico vincitore dei GP di Yamaha mentre sosteneva il round inaugurale “diluviato” in Indonesia a marzo, ma poi si è fermato all’ottavo round con la mano e il braccio sinistro fratturati in due incidenti separati.
L’ex Campione britannico è stato in grado di utilizzare un programma e un approccio diverso in inverno per affinare la propria forma fisica e feeling con la YZ450F del 2018.
“Direi che sono più avanti nel gioco”, ha affermato. “L’anno è stato cancellato dopo l’ultimo GP e ho avuto una pausa più lunga e prima del solito e poi sono tornato al lavoro prima. Avevo una base in palestra solida e un periodo di allenamento di base completo prima di Natale di due, se non tre anche, più volte. Mi ha messo in un’ottima posizione per il nuovo anno e mi sento come se avessi raggiunto il traguardo e sono motivato “. Mi sento in forma mentalmente e fisicamente forse più di quanto abbia mai avuto in questa fase dell’anno”, ha detto. “Invece di preoccuparci di fare giri, in realtà stiamo lavorando alla messa a punto: tutto ciò significa che siamo ad un ottimo livello”.
Simpson è stato in grado di tornare dai suoi problemi fisici per gli ultimi quattro round della stagione, ma ha faticato a fare qualche incursione nella parte superiore della top ten.
“La fine della stagione è stata un disastro: mi sono messo sotto troppa pressione e stavo andando forte e scomposto dopo gli infortuni”, ha affermato. “Mi sento come se fossi al di là di tutto questo e spingo ogni giorno a provare e migliorare”.
Come il pilota più esperto del team Wilvo (ha iniziato a correre nella classe MXGP nel 2011 mentre Arnaud Tonus è al suo secondo anno e Jeremy Seewer è un debuttante nel 2018) e l’unico vincitore del GP sulla 450, Simpson è probabilmente il leader del trio ma insiste sul fatto che allenarsi e lavorare con i suoi compagni più giovani è stato un esercizio utile.
“Il panino svizzero!” Scherza. “La dinamica è davvero interessante. Ho avuto un ottimo rapporto con Arnaud l’anno scorso e quel legame è ancora più stretto quest’anno e ci capiamo di più ora. Jeremy è entrato nel mix ed è stato davvero eccezionale e ben inserito nel programma. È motivato e ascolta ed è pronto ad andare avanti con le idee della squadra. Abbiamo una struttura abbastanza rigorosa da seguire e stiamo girando insieme ogni giorno per spingerci l’un l’altro e utilizzarci l’un l’altro per migliorare velocità e intensità. In pista e fuori pista diventa tutto un po ‘una competizione. Sento che migliorerà il gioco di tutti “.
Come un pilota che si interessa al lato psicologico della sua professione e frequentemente recita Blog sul proprio sito web, Simpson è un pilota attento e analitico ed è ottimista sulle sue possibilità per un’altra stagione del Grand Prix, la sua diciannovesima.
“Il prossimo mese sarà cruciale e la bobina dovrebbe essere lanciata per il primo GP.” Conclude!

Shaun Simpson is Britain’s most successful rider in the MXGP class and is on course to rebound from the worst year of his career in 2017 to deliver more spoils for the Wilvo Yamaha team. The 30 year old Scot was Yamaha’s sole Grand Prix winner as he claimed the swamped inaugural round in Indonesia in March but then sat out eight rounds with a broken hand and left arm in two separate incidents.
The former multi British Champion has been able to use a different schedule and approach in the winter to refine his fitness and feeling on the 2018 YZ450F. “I would say I am ahead of the game,” he asserted. “The year was written off after the last GP and I had a longer break and earlier than usual and then got back to work earlier. I had a solid gym and base training period complete before Christmas and two, if not three, times more riding done as well. It put my into a great position for the new year and I feel like I have hit the ground running and I’m motivated.”
“I feel fit mentally and physically perhaps more than I ever have at this stage of the year,” he said. “Instead of worrying about getting laps done we’re actually working on fine-tuning: all of this means we’re at a very good stage.”
Simpson was able to return from his physical problems for the last four rounds of the campaign but struggled to make any inroads into the upper part of the top ten. “The end of the season was a disaster: I put myself under too much pressure and was riding tight and uncomfortable after the injuries,” he assesses. “I feel like I am over all that and I’m pushing each day to try and improve.”
As the most experienced rider in the Wilvo team (he began racing in the MXGP class in 2011 while Arnaud Tonus is in his second year and Jeremy Seewer is a rookie in 2018) and the sole GP winner on the 450 Simpson is arguably the leader of the trio but insists that training and working with his younger teammates has been a beneficial exercise.
“The Swiss sandwich!” he jokes. “The dynamic is really cool actually. I had a great relationship with Arnaud last year and that bond is even closer this year and we understand each other more now. Jeremy has come into the mix and he has been really cool and fitted nicely into the programme. He is motivated and he listens and is prepared to go along with the team’s ideas. We have quite a strict structure to follow and we are riding together every day to push each other and use each other to improve speed and intensity. On track and off track it all becomes a bit of a contest. I feel it will improve everyone’s game.”
As a rider who takes an interest in the psychological side of his profession and frequently pens Blogs on his own website, Simpson is an alert and analytical racer and is optimistic of his chances for another Grand Prix season, his nineteenth. “The next month will be crucial and the coil should be sprung for the first GP.”
