KTM make more MX2 gains for 2018

Il campionato del mondo MX2 2017 della FIM è stato ampiamente definito dalla vista del Red Bull KTM di Pauls Jonass e Jorge Prado che gareggiavano per l’holeshot su base settimanale. Il team ufficiale schiererà il suo settimo campione del mondo MX2 in quattordici anni con la tabella n. 1 di Jonass nel 2018 e, preoccupato per i loro rivali, ha affermato di aver spremuto ancora più energia dalla loto potente 250 SX-F per i venti round successivi della stagione.

“Ci sono concorrenti che arrivano con nuove moto e vorremmo stare al passo con loro, specialmente in quella classe,” ha commentato il Team Manager MX2 e il Coordinatore tecnico generale Dirk Gruebel. “Abbiamo fatto i nostri compiti e abbiamo trovato di nuovo un po ‘di potenza in più … e questo aiuta sempre all’inizio! I piloti sono già felici. È un “rifacimento” e la maneggevolezza è diversa ma piace ai ragazzi, quindi stiamo andando bene. ”

La squadra contatterà nuovamente la loro stella lettone e l’adolescente spagnolo Prado: il duo ha contribuito con nove vittorie e venti podi nel 2017 a mantenere la squadra saldamente in cima alla classifica.

“Avevamo un titolo in MX2 l’anno scorso [2016], ma la gente se lo aspettava con Jeffrey [Herlings]”, afferma Gruebel. “Con Pauls che ha iniziato l’anno forte, ma ha avuto le sue battaglie a metà stagione; finalmente ha portato a casa il titolo. Penso che il livello sia sceso un po ‘in MX2 senza Jeffrey, ma era più equilibrato ed era meglio per le gare. Jeremy [Seewer, final runner-2017] ha fatto un ottimo lavoro; Devo dire. Sfidando Pauls fino alla fine. Da parte nostra è stato il caso di spingere “al 100%” durante l’inverno e nulla è cambiato “.

Tuttavia ci sono due elementi che hanno leggermente modificato il setup della MX2. Prado è ora sotto la guida di Claudio De Carli e l’allenatore del pilota di Jonass, Marc de Reuver – che sembrava essere essenziale nella campagna del titolo del 2017 – non sta più consigliando il campione in carica.

“Il cambiamento con Marc è stata una sorpresa per noi, ma questo è il suo affare”, osserva Gruebel. “Sceglie chi lo allena. Erano una grande squadra e quello che hanno fatto “al buio” e durante le settimane è stato grandioso. Forse ha imparato alcune cose da solo ormai e si sta evolvendo come persona. Ha 21 anni a breve. Vederlo correre in pista al 100% e dà sempre il 100%. La competizione sarà alta il prossimo anno … anche all’interno della squadra. ”

KTM make more MX2 gains for 2018

The 2017 MX2 FIM World Championship was largely defined by the sight of the Red Bull KTMs of Pauls Jonass and Jorge Prado vying for the holeshot on a weekly basis. The factory team will field their seventh different MX2 world champion in fourteen years with Jonass’ #1 plate in 2018 and, worryingly for their rivals, claimed to have squeezed even more power out of the fierce 250 SX-F motorcycle for the twenty rounds next season.

“There are competitors coming with new bikes and we would like to stay ahead of them, especially in that class,” commented MX2 Team Manager and general Technical Co-ordinator Dirk Gruebel. “We have done our homework and we found a little bit more horsepower again…and that always helps at the start! The riders are already happy. It is a ‘makeover’ and the handling is different but the guys like it, so we are going in a good way.”

The team will again count on their Latvian star and Spanish teenager Prado: the duo contributing nine wins and twenty podium results in 2017 to keep the squad firmly at the top of the standings.

“We had a title in MX2 last year [2016] but people expected that with Jeffrey [Herlings],” says Gruebel. “With Pauls he started the year strong but had his struggles in the middle of the season; finally he brought it home. I think the level dropped down a bit in MX2 with Jeffrey gone but it was more equal and it was better for the racing. Jeremy [Seewer, 2017 runner-up] did a very good job; I have to say. He challenged Pauls until the end. From our side it was a case of pushing ‘100%’ through the winter and nothing has changed.”

Nevertheless there are two elements that have slightly altered the MX2 set-up. Prado is now under the stewardship of Claudio De Carli and Jonass’ rider coach, Marc de Reuver – who seemed to be instrumental in the 2017 title campaign – is no longer advising the reigning champion.

“The change with Marc came as a surprise to us but that is his own deal,” observes Gruebel. “He chooses who trains him. They were a great team and what they did ‘in the dark’ and during the week was great. Maybe he learned some stuff by himself by now and he is evolving as a person. He is 21 soon. To see him riding at the track he is 100% and always gives 100%. The competition will be high next year…even within the team.”
