Searle set to remain in Kawasaki colours for 2018

The most successful British rider in the FIM Motocross World Championship from the last ten years, Tommy Searle, is set to stay with the Monster Energy DRT Kawasaki team for 2018 MXGP. Searle, who starred for Team Great Britain at the Motocross of Nations at Matterley Basin last weekend, had another injury-plagued term recovering from a knee reconstruction and then a broken hand.

Steve Dixon’s squad were initially thought to focus on the MX2 class next year with Darian Sanayei as one of the athletes remaining on the KX250F. Searle’s British Championship title in 2016 was an attractive accomplishment for Kawasaki who are banking on the former three times world championship runner-up to repeat his domestic success and then focus on breaching the MXGP podium for the first time. The 27 year old will start his fifth campaign in the premier class with Kawasaki in ’18.

“As far as all the parties are concerned with Tommy, Kawasaki Motor Europe and Steve Dixon, Tommy will stay within the team and with the same set-up to do MXGP and the British Championship,” said KME Racing Co-Ordinator Steve Guttridge. “He is our third rider that we will look after. He wants to stay.”

“That project is boxed-off so the Dixon team will be one 250 and one 450 and we really want them to win the British Championship again because they won in 2016 and it was the first time for us since Billy Mackenzie,” he added. “We want good results in MXGP as well.”

DRT will tackle their third season in ‘green’ but without Monster Energy backing in 2018 and there are still rumours that another MX2 athlete will join the line-up with outgoing Kemea Yamaha rider Brent Van Doninck rumoured for a KX berth.
