Seewer “frustrated” by rivals’ MX2 race tactics
Suzuki’s Jeremy Seewer half-joked that he didn’t know second position could feel so bad after classifying as runner-up at last week’s Grand Prix of Czech Republic. The Swiss made it onto the second step of the podium but also highlighted the difficulty in passing Red Bull KTM’s Jorge Prado in the second MX2 moto at Loket – a process that took 10 of the 19 laps and also involved a crash that scooped up Kemea Yamaha’s Benoit Paturel. After the Grand Prix #91 felt that Prado, in second place at the time, had held up the chasing group that assisted Jonass’ escape at the front and across a track that was already difficult for overtaking.
“It is racing and they didn’t do anything that wasn’t allowed, it was just so frustrating,” said the 23 year old who went 5-2. “I crashed because he is so smart, because he knew I was going to cut him off so he just stopped in the middle of the rut and I hit his rear wheel.”
“I cannot blame him, he’s a smart kid and a good racer but it was frustrating watching Pauls pass him so easily and I lost a lot of time when I could have gone faster. I have to accept that and I cannot blame them, we would so the same if my teammate was in that spot. I’m not complaining it is just a fact.”
Series leader Pauls Jonass looked somewhat bemused by the comments. The Latvian needed most of the first moto to pass his younger teammate for second spot behind Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Thomas Covington and the pair have raced hard and close in several rounds this season. Prado lacks GP experience but certainly no speed or racecraft.
Seewer watch the points gap increase from 38 to 47 points in the Czech Republic with just 300 left to win the in the remaining six rounds. His Suzuki RM-Z250 has struggled to match the KTM 250 SX-Fs out of the gate this year and Prado seemed to carry better corner exit speed on the Czech hard-pack. When asked if this was also the difference, Seewer was adamant. “Not at all,” he said “and we actually made another step this weekend which I could feel in the second race. I think everybody knows each manufacturer has their advantage and KTMs have a strong engine but we have some other strong points.”
