Herlings still doubtful of MXGP title chances but talks of new goal

Red Bull KTM’s Jeffrey Herlings is remaining very cautious on his chances of becoming the third rookie winner in a row of the MXGP crown this year. The launch of his maiden campaign was blighted by a broken hand and he also confessed to underestimating the competitiveness of the premier class of the FIM Motocross World Championship, but the three-times MX2 title holder and reigning number one has hit a rich vein of form that has pulled him up to within five points of second place in the standings.

The Dutchman has totalled six podiums (one win and five runner-up finishes) in the last seven rounds and has the highest number of trophies behind ‘brandmate’ Tony Cairoli; his form has been the most prolific from that seven race period and since his first MXGP rostrum appearance at Valkenswaard, Holland in April.

“I don’t think we can win the championship without some luck but we don’t wish injury or bad luck on anyone: we just have to be realistic,” said Herlings who is 1 point behind Gautier Paulin in third spot and 5 way from Clement Desalle, and 96 from Cairoli; almost two Grands Prix with just seven remaining.

Herlings has virtually resigned himself to a new long-term goal of giving KTM a 1-2 ranking in MXGP, which would be a first for the Austrians (Ken De Dycker managed third place while Cairoli was champion in 2013).

“After the bad start to the season we had I don’t think being second in the championship is too bad,” he commented. “I feel I can give that back to the team because we have been working so hard. We might be in different teams – me and Tony – but at the end of the day we are ‘family’.”
