Intervista by Ryan Introvigne
Buona lettura!
.
MXBARS – Ciao Marc, come stai? Sei tornato al 100% fisicamente? Hai avuto alcuni brutti infortuni ultimamente.
Ci puoi raccontare qualche aneddoto?
Ora lavori come commentatore part-time su Eurosport.
MDR – Bella domanda.
Ok niente qualifica. Ora devi fare la last chance con altri 40. Cadi in partenza ed è finita. Puoi tornare a casa e hai guidato solo 25 minuti. Sicuramente ridicolo.
MDR – Ciao ragazzi.

Hi guys, I think I will never be 100% in my life hahahaha…. Yes. I had big injury’s and will always have problems with it in my further life. My left hip hurts everyday, I dislocated it in 2008, my back is quiet ok I must say.The decision to retire comes at the end of a crazy career, you raced for different teams, even factory ones. For sure you had many satisfactions, but…which is the most important for you?
I think the MXON in 2004 stands out where I almost beat Stefan Everts on a KTM 250 2 stroke. It was an amazing weekend. The whole weekend was crazy. You also raced the Outdoor National in the USA, how was that experience?
Yes that was 2008 in Southwick on a factory Honda. It was a bit hyped before that I was gonna beat Stewart. But I never ever said that. Stewart was from another planet that year. I finished one heat 3rd. One heat I pulled out it was soooooo hot there. I almost fainted! Can you tell us one anecdote? Something crazy you did before/after a race?
Hahaha I have more then one I think? But the one I remember is that I told my mechanic Marcus from Honda Martin that I was going to win the GP of Lierop. 1st moto I won easy but 2nd moto I crashed with Barragan and rode from 15th to 1st in 3 laps. The crows went nuts and crashed again but still finished 3rd to win the GP.
Tell us which was the team you had the best relation with and the worst one and if possible, why.
Best maybe with CHAMP KTM of Kees v/d Ven. The team was Dutch, results were good then everything is fun. My family was at Honda Martin in 2008/2009. Great team. My worst was with Rinaldi Yamaha. Why? Because I had a 3 year deal with Rinaldi and in february 2007 I get a hernia in my back while testing suspension. I needed surgery but the season would be over then. So instead of that the doctors blew my back full with cortisone all year to finish the season. But I made BIG crashes because I couldn’t hold on to the factory bike.
Finally they gave me a stock engine like I asked all year and I won the last moto in Lierop 2007! But they didn’t want me anymore. 3 year contract done and I went to Martin Honda. One of my best choices in my carreer.
You now work as part-time commentator on Eurosport. What is your point of view on the 2016 MXGP season? How about Gajser and Febvre? Can Cairoli come back at the top? Which rider impressed you the most?
Man. I like this question. Season is funny. You see that on the nice natural tracks we see good fights. You see on tracks like Mexico and Thailand guys
don’t pass. Why? Because how can you pass a rider when you are 80% of the lap in the air? It’s to many jumps. Watering is a lot better this year. Track prep is better. Cairoli….. Tony is a big buddy of me and have a lot of respect for him and De Carli. 2015 Tony was never the Tony we know. His movie was launched of the winter in 2014 and Tony missed a lot of training focus I think with all the travelling. Tony has been on top for 10 years straight. It takes his tol. Tony is also human. This year I see Tony doing things and I see Tony is coming back. The season is very long and my money is on Tony. Gajser is most impressive. Last year his results didn’t really show cause he had a bike with 35 horsepower over close to 48 horsepower of the KTM’s. Now he is on an equal bike and you see how much class Tim has. Febvre is a fighter. I love his style.
He is made for the Yamaha. Tony, Tim and Romain are down to earth nice guys.
This brings you very far in the sport. I like all 3 of them.
Tell us your point of view about Villopoto and his brief appearance at the MXGP World Championship.
Well. I see it other then most people do. He had the balls to come over. He tried and had everything to lose. And he did. The 2nd GP he ever entered he won. But I tell you: NOBODY of Europe will ever succeed in USA as well. USA is another world. Only Roczen did a little bit but Ken Roczen is somebody special like nobody else. Raw talent.
Many rumors about Jeffrey Herlings on the 450cc next year, how do you think he will do on the big bike? At the moment he seems to be back to full fitness and speed.
True. But 450 is not a 250. If he rides the 450 like he does on the 250 he will have a problem. Some strong mental guys as well in the 450 class. Herlings want to show he is strong in his head but he is not. That will be his weak point on the 450 class. You won’t be champion just with talent. The need to have brains of steel like Gajser, Febvre and the king in this game is Tony.
Townley’s words in Thailand have generated much talk. What are in your opinion the big differences in the World Championship between the days when you started racing it and nowadays? What would you like to change? (example : entry fees and qualifying or what ever you have in mind)
He is right. But he apoligized later. This is weak. I always said what I think it’s not always the good way I know. But I don’t pretend like another person. I am Marc and act like Marc. Ok, Youthstream brought motocross to another level without a doubt. But the age limit have to be different. Nice example is Butron. He could have an amazing carreer in the MX2 class. But he had to move up to MXGP for his age and now his carreer is fucked. Jose is not a 450 rider.
It’s hard to say but the truth. So the EMX250 class is stacked with riders who don’t belong there? EMX250 is for upcoming riders. Not for veterans? Also the program is crazy. 125 riders let’s say go to England. Italian and Spanish riders travel there with their parents. Papa is telling his son: he we travel so far you need to qualify!!!! 7:45 on saturday you can look the track for 10 minutes, the board goes out: TIME PRACTISE! These kids need to learn the big jumps in 10 minutes and after make a fast time and daddy stay crazy in the pitlane because he travel so far. Ok no qualify. Now you have the last chance with 40 riders. You crash in the start and it’s over. You can travel back home and you only ride 25 minutes. Ridicilous of course.
In the end, what are your plans for the future , apart from enjoying life with your son Jason? We know you have a MX School. Would you be interested to run a Team, maybe for young Dutch riders? Or to be involved with some constructor.
I have a very beautiful girlfriend. She is the love of my life and I am enjoying my son Jason a lot. I am running MX training full time now. I love the
sport. Of course I know how to get on top but I also know how NOT to do it.
Many trainers don’t have this. I have been from top to bottom many times.
REALLY THANK YOU and good luck for the future.
MXBARS , see you soon
