JOEL SMETS APPOINTED KTM’S MOTOCROSS FACTORY RACING SPORTS DIRECTOR

Il Cinque volte campione del mondo Joel Smets del Belgio è stato nominato KTM Motocross Factory Racing direttore sportivo, Pit Beirer, KTM Motorsport lo ha annunciato. Si tratta di un gradito ritorno per la famiglia KTM internazionale per Smets il cui nome è saldamente ancorato tra le più belle annate in questo sport.

Pit Beirer: “Sono contento e orgoglioso che siamo stati in grado di portare una personalità come Joel in questa nuova posizione. Sono sicuro che egli sta per portare i nostri piloti ancora a cose grandi. L’esperienza di Joel e la sua carriera di successi parlano da soli, e chiaramente lui è anche un forte modello di ruolo per entrambi i nostri piloti ufficiali senior e junior “.

Anche se Smets è entrato nello sport del Motocross relativamente tardi, all’età di 17 anni, ha preso il suo primo titolo mondiale nel 1995 e ha vinto di nuovo nel 1997 e 1998. I suoi quarto e quinto titoli erano mentre correva per KTM nel 2000 e nel 2003. Smets ha iniziato 168 GP nel corso della sua carriera, e con 57 vittorie GP, si è affermato come uno dei più grandi piloti di questo sport. Smets è stato anche sei volte Campione Nazionale belga ed era Sportivo belga dell’anno nel 2000.

Smets si unisce con KTM a colmare questa nuova posizione all’interno della struttura team ufficiale e due KTM Factory Racing team manager della Red Bull, Claudio de Carli (MXGP) e Dirk Gruebel (MX2) per accoglierlo a bordo. Sarà incaricato di sovrintendere la pianificazione generale e coordinerà e facilitare programmi di formazione per il miglior vantaggio. Smets sarà anche responsabile del laboratorio gara in Belgio.

In MXGP, MX2 e le squadre KTM Junior saranno ora condivise tra due impianti campo base complete, una in Belgio e una seconda nei pressi di Roma. Le due località consentiranno loro di prendere massimo vantaggio dalle condizioni meteorologiche, e di lavorare su due servizi di classe superiori.

Il workshop presso la sede austriaca KTM Factory Racing, il luogo esclusivo in cui vengono costruite tutte le moto e motori di factory, resta il fulcro per le attività di corsa a livello mondiale della società, Beirer conferma. “Questa nuova impostazione, insieme alla nomina di Joel, garantiscono il meglio di tutto in Italia, Austria e Belgio. Con questa forte struttura di gestione e servizi eccellenti saranno sempre pronti a correre! ”

Five times World Champion Joel Smets of Belgium has been appointed KTM Motocross Factory Racing Sports Director, Pit Beirer, KTM Motorsport Director has announced. It is a welcome return to the KTM International Family for Smets whose name is firmly anchored among the finest in the sport.

Pit Beirer: “I’m pleased and proud that we have been able to bring a personality like Joel into this new position. I’m confident that he is going to lead our riders onto even greater things. Joel’s experience and his career achievements speak for themselves, and clearly he’s also a strong role model for both our senior and junior factory riders.”

Although Smets came into the sport of Motocross relatively late at the age of 17, he took his first world title in 1995 and won again in 1997 and 1998. His fourth and fifth titles were while he rode for KTM in 2000 and 2003. Smets started in 168 GPs during his career, and with 57 GP victories, he established himself as one of the sport’s greatest riders. Smets was also six-times Belgian National Champion and was Belgian Sportsman of the Year in 2000.

Smets joins KTM to fill this newly created position within the factory team structure and both Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team Managers, Claudio de Carli (MXGP) and Dirk Gruebel (MX2) welcome him onboard. He will be in charge of overseeing general planning, and will coordinate and facilitate training schedules to the best advantage. Smets will also be head of the race workshop in Belgium.

The MXGP, MX2 and KTM Factory Junior teams will now share two comprehensive base camp facilities, one in Belgium and a second near Rome. The two locations will allow them to take best advantage of prevailing weather conditions, and to work out of two top class facilities.

The Austrian workshop at KTM Factory Racing headquarters, the exclusive location where all factory bikes and engines are built, remains the hub for the company’s worldwide factory racing activities, Beirer confirmed. “This new setup, along with Joel’s appointment, guarantee we have the very best of everything in Italy, Austria and Belgium. With this strong management structure and excellent facilities we will always be READY TO RACE!”
